"I believe that to feel young and vigorous we must enjoy life by believing in ourselves, looking forward to every day, developing an acceptance of things as they are as well as the confidence to make those changes that are in our power to make"
(Marjory Barlow, Senior Alexander Technique Teacher)

Learning the Alexander

Technique

The Lesson

The Alexander lesson is most often taught in a one on one format. This personal attention allows the teacher to focus on the student's individual history of movement, and provide the kinesthetic experience integral to learning the Technique.

In a lesson, a teacher will use gentle hands and verbal guidance to direct a student's movement. The lesson will explore standing, sitting, walking, and lying down to find out more about the student's habitual ways of moving and holding unnecessary tensions.

The lesson will explore such ideas as lengthening the body into movement, leading with the eyes and head, and discovering how a dynamic balance is always at play in the body, even in apparently static positions like sitting and standing.

The primary focus is on undoing rather than doing, and non-doing rather than over-doing. We will learn the importance of a small pause before reaction to stimuli. Taking time for a longer pause in the day to decompress the spine and quiet the mind and body will also be explored.

The Alexander Technique is a means of empowering you to help yourself reach your full potential. In time you become aware of your own habits and use the principles you' ve learned to release and change on your own.

In the nearly one hundred years that the Alexander Technique has been taught, it has helped people of all ages and in many different professions. Some famous beneficiaries you may know are John Dewey, Robin Williams, Jeremy Irons, Kevin Kline, Sting, Paul McCartney and many more. Whether you are an actor, singer, writer, athlete, office worker, chef, martial artis, mom or physical therapist, the Alexander Technique can help you become healthier, happier and freer.

"Go on when it feels impossible, that's when the magic happens" (Ibid)
